Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about IELTS AI Evaluator.

How accurate is the AI scoring compared to a real IELTS examiner?

Our AI is trained on official IELTS band descriptors and typically scores within ±0.5 of a certified examiner. It evaluates the same four criteria — Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy — using the same rubric. However, AI scoring should be used as a practice tool, not as a replacement for an official test. Edge cases (e.g., highly creative or unconventional essays) may score slightly differently.

How is the IELTS band score calculated?

Your overall band score is the average of the four criterion scores: Task Response (or Task Achievement for Task 1), Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Each criterion is scored from 0–9 in 0.5 increments. The overall band is rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example, if your four scores are 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 6.5, your overall band is 6.5.

What is the difference between Task 1 and Task 2?

Task 1 (Academic) requires you to describe, summarise, or explain visual information — such as a bar chart, line graph, pie chart, table, map, or process diagram — in at least 150 words within 20 minutes. Task 2 is an essay where you respond to a point of view, argument, or problem in at least 250 words within 40 minutes. Task 2 carries more weight in your final score.

What AI model is used to evaluate my essay?

We use Llama 3.3 70B Versatile via Groq, one of the most capable open-weight language models available. It has been prompted with the official IELTS band descriptors for each criterion to ensure consistent, rubric-aligned scoring and feedback.

How often does my free quota reset?

Free plan users get 1 evaluation per week. The quota resets every 7 days from the date of your last reset. Basic plan users get 10 evaluations per month, and Pro plan users have unlimited evaluations.

Is my essay stored? Is my data secure?

Yes, your essays are stored in our database so you can review your history and track your progress over time. All data is stored securely using Supabase (PostgreSQL) with Row Level Security — meaning only you can access your own essays. We do not share or sell your essay content.

Can I use this for General Training IELTS (not just Academic)?

Yes. For Task 2 (the essay), the band descriptors and evaluation criteria are the same for both Academic and General Training. For Task 1, General Training requires a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) rather than a data description. Select 'Task 1' and paste your letter — the AI will evaluate it based on Task Achievement, Coherence, Lexical Resource, and Grammar.

Why does my AI score sometimes differ from what I expect?

AI scoring can vary slightly between evaluations, especially for borderline essays. Factors like ambiguous task interpretation, complex sentence structures, or unconventional arguments may cause minor fluctuations. We recommend evaluating multiple essays and tracking your average score over time for a more reliable picture of your level.

How long does an evaluation take?

Most evaluations complete in 10–20 seconds. During peak usage, it may take up to 30 seconds. If an evaluation takes longer than 60 seconds, please check your internet connection and try again.

Can I re-evaluate an essay after editing it?

Yes! In your Essay History, click 'Practice Again' on any previous essay. It will pre-fill the essay form with your original text so you can edit and re-submit to compare scores.

What do the improvement tips show me?

After each evaluation, the Improvement Tips card automatically identifies your weakest criterion and gives you 3 specific, actionable tips to improve it. For example, if Lexical Resource is your lowest score, you'll see tips on expanding your vocabulary range, avoiding repetition, and using collocations correctly.
